About Mrs. Redmond
First, I want you to know how truly happy I am to be able to teach your kids! I've taught for 16 years (this includes a 7 year gap of staying home with my son). I'm also happy to send my own child here (Luke- 4th grade) because of how much I love our community and I know he's in a great place academically, socially, and emotionally!
I have a BS in Special Education and Elementary Education and I'm constantly seeking opportunities to learn and grow. In fact, I've really taken a deep dive into Science of Reading and our school has been a leader in the community in terms of moving away from Balanced Literacy and into Science of Reading. If this is something you're interested in learning more about, I'm happy to share more information with you!
I live in TGS with my husband, Tim and our son. We also have 2 adult daughters who live in Austin, TX and St. Louis.
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
During the first week of 3rd grade, we made a poster and wrote things we can’t do YET. This morning, we went over our list and every single person can either do the thing they couldn’t do YET at the beginning of the year (ex: multiplication, tying shoes, etc.) or they have been working on it and not giving up! I hope they always remember the impact of having a growth mindset! We‘ve had a great week full of final assessments and projects, but my favorite part of the week was “Thank You” day and getting to read my thank you letter to the kids. I’m posting it below so they can look back and read it to remember they are very loved at SMOS Enjoy the pics from rainbow day, unique talent day, and our final Science project
Dear Class,
I want to thank you for being my last 3rd grade class. I feel so lucky that my last group was you guys and you will always have a special place in my heart for that! One day, 3rd grade will be a distant memory. I hope that when you look back, you remember me and the good times we had in Room 205. I know that’s what I’ll remember when I think of you! I hope you’ll come visit me in the Learning Lab. I hope to get hugs from you when I see you outside or in the hallways. I hope to get to watch you come up to the front of church on your last day of Mass in 8th grade. I’ll be right up front cheering you on to your next big life adventure. I’m so lucky to be your teacher and I love each one of you so much!
Love,
Mrs. Redmond

Field Day was such a fun end to the week! The kiddos also enjoyed being treated like royalty today:) Thanks so much to those of you who sent or made cards this week- they were so sweet and I felt very appreciated! In Language Arts, we continue to learn about early European exploration by expanding our knowledge of explorers (Hernando de Soto and Francisco Vasquez de Coronado) and the Spanish settlements. We took our Unit 12 & 13 assessment this week. I’ll have those graded and sent out next week. In the meantime, enjoy some pics of Field Day, photo booth day, and our red carpet treatement at lunch!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
3 weeks left! These guys were AMAZING on the field trip to the Arch! I was so impressed with the knowledge they showed about Lewis and Clark! I’m so happy they were able to have a hands-on experience! In Math this week, we’ve learned how to compare fractions on a number line and how to compare fractions that do not have the same numerator or denominator. Next week we will learn about fractions that are larger than one and we will also take the combined Topic 12 &13 assessment. In Language Arts, we’ve learned about navigation in the age of exploration and about how Paolo Toscanelli’s maps impacted European exploration of the Americas. In Science, we’re gearing up for our final project- the students will need to build a structure (with given materials) that will survive a simulated natural disaster! I’m looking forward to Field Day next Friday- hope to see you there if you’re able to volunteer! Please enjoy pics from our field trip and our lunch outside today.
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
As we enter the final stretch of 3rd grade I’ve been reflecting on how much these kiddos have grown this year emotionally and academically and I’m so impressed! We’ve been working hard and playing hard this week! In Language Arts, we’ve continued with our Early Exploration of North America unit, focusing heavily on comprehension, and suffixes. In Math we’ve started comparing fractions, first with visual models and now comparing fractions on a number line. In Science, we’re exploring the different features of structures that protect them from dangerous weather. I’d also like to add that I was so happy to introduce the kids to MY favorite recess game at their age- chinese jump rope! Not only did they catch on amazingly fast, but they’ve taught 2nd graders, Kindergartners, and Preschoolers how to play! Please enjoy some pics from our countdown shenanigans!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
I can’t believe we’ve already started our End of Year Countdown! The kids have been looking so forward to it and so have I! Thank you for your cooperation with keeping the daily activities secret! In Language Arts, we wrapped up our Native American Regions and Cultures Unit and began to explore suffixes. In Math, we have expanded our knowledge of fractions by being able to apply given numerators and denominators and we have learned to plot fractions on a 0-1 numer line. In Social Studies, we are still immersed in our Oregon Trail experience and in Science we have begun our Dangerous Weather Unit. This unit focuses on solutions for people and structures affected by dangerous weather and will end in a special project! Please enjoy pics of the classroom set up and ready for the countdown and our first balloon pop!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
What an exciting first week back! It was so awesome to experience the solar eclipse with the kids! In Math, we’ve started our Fractions unit. So far, we’re focusing on the following concepts: fractions are equal parts of a whole, we can identify the numerator and denominator, we can identify shaded parts of a whole and make a fraction, and we can identify fractions on a number line. In Language Arts, we’ve continued our Language Arts unit and took a comma placement quiz. In Social Studies we have immersed ourselves in westward expansion by starting a virtual journey on the Oregon Trail! Finally, in Science we are beginning our Weather unit. We will be focused on finding solutions for weather-based hazards. Please enjoy pics from our Skittles math activity!

We made it to Spring Break! We’ve had a busy three days learning about Etu the Hunter, Akando and Aponi the Gatherers, and Alemeda the Basket Weaver in Reading- ask your kiddos to tell you what they’ve learned about them! We also learned about comma placement in addresses, dates, and letters. This culminated with a stop at the mailbox this morning on the way to Mass so the kids could mail the letters they wrote! In Science, we concluded our Force and Motion Unit and in Math we concluded Topic 11 with our Assessment. We will be starting on fractions when we return to school. They also put their Math skills to work during class store today! I wish you all a safe and happy Spring Break! Please enjoy the pics of the kids mailing their letters.
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
We’re slowly but surely making our way to Spring Break! My goal is for us to finish Topic 11 in Math and take our assessment before we leave for break next week. This unit focuses on multiple step word problems, using all operations. It is typically our toughest unit and I’m so impressed with the grit the kids are showing in solving these problems! The kids did a great job with their addresses- please practice over Spring Break, as many did not know their zip codes. We addressed envelopes and will be writing letters next week and walking them to the mailbox to send! Here‘s a pic of Miss Terrell, our teacher for the day yesterday!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
We did it! Living Museum 2024 was a success thanks to the extremely hard work of the students and cooperation from their families! I’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating- this is a HUGE undertaking for 3rd graders in all aspects and I’m always so proud and amazed at the way they rise to the occasion! In Math, we wrapped up Topic 10 today with our assessment. Next week we will begin Topic 11: Multi-Step word problems. I did not introduce anything new in Language Arts this week- we did review activities for Parts of Speech and Character Traits, as well as went on a digital exploration of Native American tribes throughout the US to introduce our upcoming Unit we’ll be starting next week: Native Americans- Regions and Cultures. Some students were so inspired by the digital exploration they made their own models of wampum belts during exploratory center time! In Social Studies we learned about the Missouri Compromise and are beginning to learn about the Oregon and Sante Fe trails. Next week, the kids will need to come to school knowing their full address for our new grammar unit!

We ended our week this week with a lovely presentation of the Stations of the Cross at church. This week we started our speech writing for Living Museum. Some of us are still typing speeches, some are working on revisions, and some have started memorizing their speeches! I’m so very proud of all the hard work they’ve done! In Math, we took our Topic 9 Assessment today- I apologize for the grading slip- I believe it might say Topic 10. Next week we will begin Topic 10! Please enjoy a pic of some serious shopping at class store Thursday and of our Teacher for the Day today- Jack English!

We are moving right along with our Living Museum research! This week, we learned how to find credible information on the internet: what to look for and what to avoid. We also learned how to glean information from larger texts by referring to the table of contents and/or skimming through chapters. In Math, we have been working on two and three digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. In Social Studies, we are wrapping up our unit on native american tribes of Missouri and how the Westward Expansion affected the tribes. We had our first jet launch in Science and now we have moved on to making modifications for our next launch. Essential questions the students are to think about are: How does the amount of force change depending on the “catapult”? What position does our “piston” need to be in to work most effectively? How does the shape of the wings relate to the motion of the jet? While this unit tends to be a fun favorite, it also requires a lot of critical thinking skills! Please enjoy pics from our first jet launch!

We’re really going out with a bang today with this snow! We had a lot of students leave early today, so we are delaying our jet launches (Science: Force and Motion) until next week to be sure everyone can participate. In Language Arts we completed our Character Analysis study with a fun “Who Am I?” activity. The students who chose to read theirs aloud to the class did so with great expression! We also learned how to find credible online resources and began our Living Museum graphic organizers. So far, the kids have found their character’s date of birth, place of birth, and 3 interesting facts about their childhood. In Math, we’ve started more complicated regrouping addition with 3 digit numbers or adding more than two 3 and 2 digit numbers. We had a special teacher today- Ms. (Cecilia) Schoemel! She did a wonderful job administering the spelling assessment, progress checking Living Museum binders, making sure students lined up quietly in the hallway, and organizing our Language Arts activity! Please enjoy some pics from this week and have a great weekend!

I’m so proud of how hard the kids worked on their Spelling Words this week! In Language Arts, we finished reading Gods, Giants, and Dwarves and ended Language Arts today with an assessment on Contractions. In Math, Mrs. Bounds came in and we introduced a new game to the students in order to prepare them for the concept of making tens/regrouping. Monday we will extend the game to include equations! In Science, we continued our Force and Motion unit by learning how jets are launched off the tiny runways of aircraft carriers and we made our own jets with launching systems. We will be racing our jets next week! Finally, in Social Studies, we explored the mysterious disappearance of the Mississippian Mound Builders of Cahokia.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Monday: Students need to bring their Living Museum books to school. If you ordered a book or books and they are delayed, just shoot me an email and let me know.
Tuesday:Valentine parties will be Tuesday the 13th, since Ash Wednesday is the 14th. STUDENTS MAY DRESS UP IN VALENTINE OR MARDI GRAS GEAR. They will be passing out Valentines. There are 23 students in class.

We’ve sure had a fun week dressing up, playing games, expressing gratitude, and enjoying some warm-ish weather! I’m so impressed with the level of participation and school spirit the kids have shown! There was so much going on in the afternoons we did not have Science or Social Studies this week. In Math we wrapped up Topic 8 and took our assessment today (they will be sent home next week). We will be moving on to Topic 9 (regrouping) next week. In Language Arts we had our spelling assessment today and started reading Norse Mythology! The kids are so excited to learn more about Thor, Loki, Odin, and the gang :) Ask them what they’ve learned so far! Learning Museum forms were due today and I’m happy to say that everyone had their first choice approved! Just a reminder: Everything except speech memorization and costume putting together will be done at school. Please enjoy the pics from this week!

What a long short week! Does anyone else feel like it’s January 45th? Although it was long, it was good! We learned about Augustus Caesar (ask your kiddos if they remember who his best friend was), talked through the framework of Living Museum, estimated numbers with multi-digit addition problems, wrapped up our learning about the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark expedition, and learned how to develop and defend opinions with evidence from text and use that information for a constructive debate. I didn’t get any pictures this week, unfortunately. Let’s all cross our fingers for outdoor recess weather next week! Have a great weekend!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
We’ve had a busy, fun week of learning in room 205! In Language Arts, we learned about linking verbs and about Julius Caesar. The students split into teams, depending on whether they thought Caesar was a hero or traitor and defend their opinions on a collaborative poster with information from the text. Ask your kiddo the following: What did Julius Caesar do that started a Civil War? What did he bring to Rome from Egypt? What happened while he was in Egypt? What group of people in Rome considered Julius Caesar hero? In Math, we did some multiplication and division fluency review and learned about the Associative Property of Addition. One of the ways we learned was by playing Associative Property Go-Fish! We also had a visit from Mr. Shorter and the theme was “Respect”. Please enjoy pics from Mr. Shorter’s visit, the hero vs. traitor debate, and Associative Property Go-Fish!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a restful break! Thank you so very much for all the
sweet cards and gifts! I was overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness of everything! We’re slowly getting back in the swing of things this short couple of days together and next week we’ll be going back full force into academics. Our spelling list is posted above and we’ll also be focusing on action, helping, and linking verbs. In reading, we will continue with our Ancient Roman Civilization and in Math we will take the Topic 7 Assessment and move on to Topic 8 (Using Strategies and Properties for Addition ). In Social Studies, we will learn more about the Louisiana Purchase and in Science, we will continue with Electricity and Magnetism. Yesterday and Today we reviewed school rules and expectations and did some fun activities, including a scavenger hunt with facts about how other countries and cultures celebrate the New Year! Enjoy pics from our Christmas Party and scavenger hunt
****Special Note****
This is the time of year we start getting low on supplies. Currently, we are low on cleaning wipes and we could also use gallon-size (or larger) ziploc bags.
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
I’m so happy to be back with the kids! They definitely reminded me today that we’re full of Christmas spirit in Room 205! There isn’t much news this week since I’m just back today, but Mrs. Biegacki said they did a wonderful job of being respectful and completing their work! We’re so lucky to have been able to have her come in and teach in my place :) We had a tough spelling test today- I warned the students that the words were going to be quickly becoming increasingly difficult and I think for some of them, today’s test drove the point home that they need to be sure to study! Just a reminder that next week is a short week, with a half day Thursday. The kiddos will still need to bring a snack to school that day.
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
This was a fun-filled week in Room 205! In Math, we continued to learn that Area is additive and how to find area using square units of measurement. Our practice assessment will be Tuesday and our regular assessment will be Wednesday. In Reading, we’ve started our new unit: Ancient Roman Civilization. We first learned about the massiveness of the Roman Empire and it’s beginnings, with the legend of Romulus and Remus. We also learned how to find prepositions in a sentence. In Science, we’ve started our Electricity and Magnetism unit by learning about the two types of electricity (current and static) and how open/closed circuits work. In Social Studies, we’ve wrapped up our Geography portion of Missouri and will begin with the history of Missouri next week. We had our class store Thursday and Friday we did one of my favorite projects- a STEAM project called that Ugly Sweater Project. Students had to find gift tags with multiplication/division word problems and complete their answer sheets. They were then given 2 points for every correct equation/answer. They then used their points at the “shop” to buy decorations for their ugly Christmas sweaters! I told them I love this project because it’s the only time I ever get to tell students their work is hideous ;) Please enjoy the pics from the Ugly Sweater project!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
It’s so hard to believe we’re almost to Thanksgiving! We had a busy week of learning in Room 205! In Language Arts, we finished Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, concluding our Classic Tales Unit. We also reinforced our knowledge of article adjectives, adjectives, who/which clauses, and homophones. We began Unit 6 in Math, learning how to measure the area of an object. Right now the students are learning to multiply LxW instead of individually counting square units. They are also learning to identify which unit of measurement they are using for various problems. In Science, we wrappped up animal and plant adaptations and behaviors and we will soon begin our Electricity and Magnetism Unit. In Social Studies, we learned the key differences between Urban, Suburban, and Rural areas and next we will identify how our surrounding areas fit in to those categories. Since next week is such a short week, there will be no website update. Please also note there are no spelling words next week. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break! Please enjoy the video I took of the kids doing the “Division Challenge” game!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
We were able to get back into the swing of things pretty quickly after break! In Language Arts we learned about Homophones, ending blends. We also finished The Wind in the Willows- the kids were so bummed to come to the end! Next week we will conclude Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and we’ll begin our Ancient Roman Civilization unit. In Math, we had a multiplication and division review week. Some students worked on an enrichment project and others worked together on fluency packets. In Studies, we learned about the various landscapes in Missouri and in Science we learned about innate and learned animal behaviors. On the way back from Mass Wednesday, we stopped on Flora to collect leaves and made leaf animals when we returned to school! Book orders were sent home this week and are due Monday, November 27th. Enjoy the pics from Mass and creating our leaf animals!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
Due to the short week, we stuck with review activities and had a whole lot of Halloween fun! Enjoy the pics and see you at conferences!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
We had a great week in Room 205! In Math, we worked on building our fluency skills with multiplication and division by doing fluency review using our mental math skills. In Language Arts, we learned who/which clauses, worked with ending blends, and started the final drafts of our Opinion paragraphs relating to The Wind in the Willows. In Science we learned about the ways animals adapt to their environment and how that affects their environmental traits and in Social Studies we learned about the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Ask your kiddos to spell Mississippi for you :)! We had class store today and the kids were super excited about their purchases. Have a great weekend!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
We had such a fun time reading our spooky stories today! Thanks so much to all of you who donated or offered to donate candles! The were sent home today. We had our Concept 5 spelling assessment today, focusing on initial consonant blends and began to plan our Opinion paragraphs this week, as well as started Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and reviewing article adjectives and pronouns. In Math we took our Topic 4 assessment today and continued to build our multiplication and division skills. In Science we delved deeper into plant and animal life cycles by comparing and contrasting them and in Social Studies we did some fun team-building activities! We also had so much fun playing a kickball game against our 4th grade buddies Monday! A lot of friends have been forgetting their snacks lately- most of the time I have something extra in my lunch to give them, but a gentle reminder to pack a snack in the morning will help them! Have a great weekend and enjoy the pics!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
So sorry for the update delay! I was under the weather Friday and it got away from me. Last week in Language Arts we continued our Classic Tales Unit with the end of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp. We also watched the movie (20 minutes a day) to talk about the differences in characters, settings, storyline, and perspective in a classic version of a story vs. the modern version. We continue with using Multiplication knowledge to solve Division problems in Math, with our assessment coming up this Friday. I promise more pics with Friday’s update this week! :)
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
It’s starting to feel like Fall! We started off the week getting into the spirit of Halloween by making handprint bats!
In Math, we’re learning how to use our multiplication facts to help us solve division equations. We are still using strategies like counters and number lines, if needed. In Language Arts, we continue our Classic Tales Unit by reading the Wind in the Willows and Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp pt.II. With these stories, we’re working on the skills of listening and reading comprehension, as well as third and first person perspective. The students rewrote a passage written in third person to make it a first person perspective.
We also learned how to identify article adjectives in sentences. In Social studies we are wrapping up finding absolute location and in Science we learned about inherited vs. environmental traits. We also had a special lesson this week from Mr. Shorter! Has your child asked you to make empanadas yet? :) Please enjoy the pics from the week!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
We had such a great time at the 3rd grade retreat and pep really today! Due to these exciting activities, I’m moving our Topic 2 Math Assessment and Concepts 1&2 Spelling Assessment to Monday. In Language Arts we continued with the Wind in the Willows, focusing on perspective, listening comprehension, and character traits. We also studied our spelling words through games on the Spelling Stars website and started the Fix It! grammar series. In Science, we’ve begun to learn about inherited traits. In Math, we continued with Topic 2 and took the practice assessment for Topic 2. I will add next week’s spelling words to the website Monday!
See below for pics from the classroom and our 3rd grade retreat!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
This week was a big first for these kiddos- It was their first time taking a standardized test that wasn’t read aloud to them and their first time filling in bubbles on a scantron. It was stressful to the kids but they powered through! Because of all the testing, we had an extremely light week academically. We did not have Science, Social Studies, or Religion this week because the time conflicted with testing. We started a mystery packet to work on parts of speech for Language Arts and reviewed multiplication through activities. Next week we will take our Unit 2 assessment and, as my email today stated, we will begin our first Spelling unit next week!
I’d also like to tell you all how extremely proud I am of how quickly the kids got inside yesterday and how well they handled their big feelings! I didn’t have much time to take pics this week, but I was able to sneak in a few!
What We're Up To-Ms. Cheatham
This week was a tough week of sitting, quiet voices, brainwork and tons of mints! I am glad to report that we all made it through with flying colors!
It wasn't all work work work, we had lots of opportunities to have some chromebook time, play board games, War Tournaments and tons of book reading! Speaking of which, we had our first Library time! We enjoyed being able to check out books and hang out in the loft. We will be able to keep our books for two weeks, since our library time alternates weeks with our Mindfulness lesson with Mrs. Donovan.
I will soon be posting pictures! I cant wait for you all to see them! We have been working hard in class!!!
3rd Grade Religion
We are collecting items to make bags for the homeless in honor of St. Vincent de Paul’s mission. After learning about him all month, the students decided to make Care Bags for the homeless people in our community. With the imput of both Redmond and Cheatham Classrooms, the students came up with this list of care items.
Blankets Matches travel pillows MRE meals
Plastic reusable water bottles battery-operated fans
Band-Aids First aid kits ponchos wind jackets
socks gloves hand warmers granola bars
sleeping bags fidgets toothpaste toothbrushes
feminine products Toilet paper backpack sanitizer
pencils and notepads hairbrush combs
Bibles Prayers from us
This is quite a list! The students were very thoughtful of what people would need if they didn't have a home to go to. My hope is to get lots of items to be able to share between the two classes to make at least one bag for each student to hand out. For Sleeping bags and blankets, I thought we could replace them with emergency blankets found in camping stores. They can be pretty inexpensive, and much more feasible for a gallon baggie! Feel free to think outside the box! We have 44 students!
What We're Up To-Mrs. Redmond
This week went by fast! In Math, we focused on the factors 0,1,5,10,and 9. We looked for patterns while multiplying and learned strategies for those specific factors. In Language Arts we continued with the Wind in the Willows and Sir Gus. Today, we had an informal assessment to determine their progess with comprehension. In Science, we learned about cones and spores, as well as the needs of plants. In Social Studies we’re learning to use a map grid to locate major cities in Missouri. Please see below for pics from the past week!
What We're Up To- Mrs. Redmond
We had our first Math assessment today! I’m so proud of all the kids- they really worked to use their strategies! Although we are looking for accuracy, the overall goal of this assessment is to see if they are using the strategies they’ve learned so far (making arrays, drawing groups, using a number line, counting by 2's and 5's, remembering the rules for 0 and 1). This is the “dipping our toes in” part of Multiplication and is very new to them! In Science, we are learning how cones reproduce and in Social Studies we are learning about Missouri’s neighboring states and what the “midwest” looks like on a map. In Language Arts, we’ve continued to read The Wind in the Willows and Sir Gus, as well as perspective writing, writing an alternate ending, and parts of speech. See below for some pics from our week!
What We're Up To- Mrs. Redmond
It’s been a busy week in Room 205! We’ve started our Classic Tales unit in Language Arts and we’ve begun learning strategies for Multiplication and Division in Math! Although there will be an assessment for Unit 1 next Friday, please know these are ongoing skills and mastery is NOT expected. This assessment will show how well they can use the strategies we’ve learned so far so I want to make sure your expectations are not set for 3s or 4s at this point. In Science we learned about seed dispersal and drew diagrams to demonstrate how a variety of seeds can be dispersed. In Social Studies we are beginning to study the geography of Missouri. Please scroll down for pic from this week!

What a great time we've had in Room 205
so far! I'm excited to jump into academics next week! In the meantime, enjoy some first week pics! You might notice we also apparently have a new class pet!
